Abstract

Autoimmune thyroid diseases are characterized by the presence of autoantibodies to thyroid peroxidase, thyroglobulin, and thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor. Hashimoto¡¯s thyroiditis is caused by the destruction of thyroid epithelial cells by autoantibodies and cytokines. In Graves¡¯ disease, autoantibodies increase thyroid size and hormone secretion. The occurrence of these two autoimmune thyroid diseases in one patient has been reported very rarely. It is because they have different mechanisms and symptoms. Here we report a rare case of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism occurred one after another 3 times, which is thought to be due to the simultaneous occurrence of Hashimoto¡¯s thyroiditis and Graves¡¯ disease.
